Burnley vs Sunderland predictions and betting tips – Battle of promoted duo

Burnley and Sunderland had contrasting starts to the new Premier League seasons, although both teams were involved in 3-0 scorelines. For Burnley, defeat by Tottenham Hotspur. For Sunderland, victory over West Ham United.

This already feels like a big game for the Clarets, who will be keen to get one over on their fellow promoted side. Who will come out on top at Turf Moor?

Burnley vs Sunderland predictions

Sunderland could not have asked for a better start to their first season in the Premier League since 2016/17.

The Black Cats welcomed West Ham United to the Stadium of Light on matchday one and promptly blew them away.

Second-half goals from Eliezer Mayenda, Dan Ballard and Wilson Isidor helped Sunderland to a handsome 3-0 victory, as they marked their return to the top tier in style.

Burnley, on the other hand, were beaten 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspur. The Clarets held their own for large parts of the match, but they were ultimately outgunned by Spurs’ superior attackers.

Tottenham took their chances – one in brilliant fashion by Richarlison – and Burnley did not. That was the difference.

There were positives for Scott Parker to take from his team’s display, but the defeat by Spurs served as a reminder (as if they needed it) that the Premier League is a much higher standard than the Championship.

Burnley’s backline was only breached 16 times in 46 league games last term. They have already conceded 18.75 percent of that amount this season.

The Clarets will also have to develop more of a cutting edge in the final third. Burnley fashioned opportunities against Spurs, but that counts for nothing unless you put them away.

“Really satisfied with parts of that performance really,” Parker said. “I thought we started slowly today. I thought they came right at us, put us under a lot of pressure and they obviously scored an early goal.

“I thought our reaction was superb… I was very, very pleased with our general reaction and in our general play.”

Sunderland were much more clinical against West Ham, much to the delight of their manager Regis Le Bris. The Frenchman has done a wonderful job at the Stadium of Light up to now and another win this weekend would only make him even more popular with the Sunderland faithful.

“I’m happy for the fans, the players and the club,” Le Bris said afterwards. “We had different stages during pre-season, we spoke a lot about the different layers we have to add to our game model with new players.

“It was obvious that it starts from the foundations. We showed today that the team worked well and it was hard to beat with a mid-low block.”

Burnley vs Sunderland betting tips

Burnley and Sunderland will do battle in an important early-season clash at Turf Moor.

Draw represents good value

Sunderland patently had a more impressive start to the campaign than Burnley, but it is important not to go overboard.

West Ham at home is a much kinder fixture than Tottenham away. Remember, too, that Burnley accumulated 24 more points than Sunderland last season. The Clarets were a superior side over 46 matches.

Still, Sunderland have done more to strengthen their squad in the summer and they will have gained real confidence from that resounding triumph over West Ham.

Burnley have home advantage on their side and it is worth noting that they did not lose a single game in front of their own supporters last term.

All things considered, the draw looks like good value.

Goals to be at a premium

The last two meetings between these two teams at Turf Moor finished goalless, and it would not be a huge surprise if this one followed suit.

As mentioned above, Burnley’s defensive record was outstanding last time out. Parker will hope his team can recapture that resolve this weekend.

Sunderland had great success on the counter-attack last weekend, and Burnley will have to be wary of their quick breaks forward.

This will be a hard-fought encounter between two teams desperate to come out on top. It will not necessarily be full of quality, though, and goals are likely to be on the low end.

Mayenda can make mark

Sunderland have splashed out more than £150m on new signings this summer, but it is important that they do not completely jettison the players who got them here.

Le Bris is aware of the need to strike the right balance between newcomers and the core of last season’s squad.

“They keep the identity of the club and the way we worked last season,” he said. We built this strength about togetherness, about the way we can work as a team. I think we showed it today and these players are important for that.”

Mayenda was Sunderland’s second-highest scorer last term and he also found the net against West Ham. The Spaniard can strike again this weekend.
