Chevy Corvette Z06 and ZR1 Recalled Over Fire Risk While Refueling

The C8 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and ZR1 stand a chance of catching fire while being gassed up. A new recall highlights potential fire risk for owners at the pump, and Chevrolet has gone so far as to issue a stop-sale order on the pair while it works on a remedy for existing inventory. That means, if you've got an order in, it might be delayed a bit.

The recall is pretty fresh, and owners have taken to the Corvette forums to caution others and share their experience. The recalls are so new, in fact, that the paperwork with the NHTSA hasn't even been uploaded to the association's website. Instead, you'll need to view the details via GM's own recall tracker.
The issue, in GM's own words, has to do with the car's cooling fans: "General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain 2023 – 2026 model year Chevrolet Corvette vehicles equipped with a left-side radiator/fan combination. In these vehicles, excess fuel spilled into the vehicle fuel-filler pocket during refueling may leak onto an ignition source."
Cooling Fans May Waft Fuel Into The Wrong Place

As the photo above illustrates, the cooling fan housed in front of and under the fuel filler may waft fuel into the wrong place. The result, of course, would be fuel contacting hot parts of the car that the fan is intended to cool. GM is pretty serious about the risk, as its caps lock warning indicates: "ALWAYS CONFIRM THAT THE FUEL NOZZLE IS COMPLETELY INSERTED INTO THE VEHICLE’S FUEL PIPE BEFORE FUELING. NEVER OVERFILL THE TANK OR ATTEMPT TO FILL AFTER THE FUEL PUMP’S AUTOMATIC SHUT OFF CLICKS ONCE. ALWAYS TURN OFF THE VEHICLE’S ENGINE DURING REFUELING"
GM says owners can visit the dealer to have an insert that will divert any spilled fuel away from the fans installed, but the device isn't available yet. For now, the recall affects only US-spec 2023-2026 Chevrolet Corvette Z06s and 2025-2026 Corvette ZR1s.
