What Is Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. It typically appears as a small, shiny bump or patch of skin and is primarily caused by long-term sun exposure. While it rarely spreads to other parts of the body, it can cause significant damage if left untreated, often requiring surgery to remove the cancerous cells.

Dermatologists emphasize that prevention is key. Wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen, seeking shade, and covering up with protective clothing can dramatically reduce the risk of developing BCC and other forms of skin cancer.

Ramsay's latest health revelation follows another frightening incident just last year. In June 2024, the celebrity chef was hospitalized after what he described as “a really bad accident” during a bike ride in Connecticut. The crash left him with severe bruising across his torso, though he managed to avoid broken bones or more serious injuries.

At the time, Ramsay took to Instagram to update fans, joking that the aftermath left him looking like “a purple potato.” He also praised the medical team at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London for their care and credited his helmet with saving his life: “I’m thankful for all the doctors, nurses and staff … but most thankful for my helmet that saved my life.”

By the end of the year, in December 2024, Ramsay confirmed on Instagram that the bruising had healed. He included a brief clip of his injuries in a reflective year-in-review video, showing fans just how much he had endured and overcome in the months following the crash.

Even as he’s faced health scares over the past year, Gordon Ramsay shows no signs of slowing down. The chef-turned-TV titan continues to expand his footprint at Fox, which recently announced yet another food-based unscripted series with Ramsay at the helm.

The new show, titled "Gordon Ramsay’s Secret Service," premiered on May 21 and marks the seventh Ramsay-led project on the network. Taking a twist on the "Kitchen Nightmares" format, the series sees Ramsay secretly infiltrating struggling restaurants before revealing himself in classic dramatic fashion.
