Iga Swiatek breaks world record and achieves never-done-before feat in historic US Open win

Iga Swiatek cruised into the US Open second round with a history-making victory against Emiliana Arango.
The world no. 2’s 6-1 6-2 win has confirmed her spot in a seventh consecutive second round match at Flushing Meadows.
Swiatek, who won the US Open women’s singles title in 2022, hit 26 winners against Arango on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.
She also broke a world record in the process as she looks to back up her Wimbledon triumph with a seventh Grand Slam title.
How Swiatek made history
Swiatek has won 65 consecutive WTA opening matches, which is the most since the Open Era began in 1968.
The 24-year-old has broken the record that was previously held by nine-time Grand Slam champion Monica Seles.
Alongside her world record, Swiatek has won her 50th match in 2025.
The Polish star is the only female player to ever win 50 matches or more across the past four years.
Victories in 2022, 2023 and 2024 tallied at 67, 68 and 64 respectively.
Furthermore, Swiatek has won all of her opening matches in the US Open women’s singles in straight sets in her first seven appearances.
She is the first player to hit this feat since her compatriot Agnieszka Radwanska in 2012.
What did she say?
Speaking after the win against Arango, Swiatek was asked about the huge turnout from Polish fans in New York.
“Yeah, Polish fans are kind of everywhere,” she replied via The Tennis Letter on X. “It’s super nice to feel the support always.
“They’re coming kind of around the world too, every place I play. It’s great, but I also really appreciate people that come from different countries.
“I feel every year it’s more. I just hope they’ll enjoy my game.”
Swiatek will meet Suzan Lamens in the second round in what will be their first ever match against each other.
Anna Kalinskaya or Yulia Putintseva await in the third round.
Swiatek’s best finish at the US Open since winning in 2022 came last year in her quarter-final exit to eventual finalist Jessica Pegula.
It’s all about Taylor
Swiatek spent a considerable amount of her press conference being asked about news of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement.
“Well, I’m just happy for her, because she deserves the best. Obviously she had a lot of boyfriends, so we know all about that. So hopefully this one will, you know, stick forever. Travis seems like a great guy.”
Swiatek even joked that she would not be fielding any non-engagement questions from the media.
A ‘Swiftie’, the no.2 added when asked about how big a fan she was: “I just followed everything. You know, I was following her, but also some fan pages to see the updates.
“When the Reputation album came out, I’ve got to say I didn’t really like it that much. I liked the previous albums better. So I had a little break.
“But then in 2019 and when Folklore and Evermore were released during COVID, I started listening to Taylor again. And I like Reputation now, don’t worry.”
