Ipswich v Derby predictions

Ipswich head into this weekend’s Championship fixture with Derby still looking for their first win of the season despite having entered the campaign as the favourites for promotion following their relegation from the Premier League in May.

Kieran McKenna’s side currently sit on two points from their opening three Championship games, and have also been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after being on the wrong end of a shock penalty shootout defeat to League Two side Bromley in round one.

The Tractor Boys had drawn their opening two games of the season against Birmingham and Southampton sides both expected to be in the hunt for promotion this season, but last weekend saw them fall to a surprise defeat to Preston, which now leaves Ipswich down in 18th in the table.

The Suffolk side will be hoping Saturday’s game in front of their home fans against a Derby side with only a point to their name will be the perfect opportunity to record their first victory of the campaign and kickstart their season.

Ipswich have also had a full week to prepare for this weekend’s clash which may come as an advantage, with Derby having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night at the second round stage after conceding a 91st minute winner away at Premier League side Burnley.

John Eustace’s side managed to pick up their first point of the Championship capmaign last weekend after snatching a late draw at home against Bristol City, which will act as a confidence booster ahead of their trip to the title favourites on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams have struggled to prevent themselves from conceding chances defensively so far this season, with only QPR having conceded more than their nine goals against them across the opening three games of the second tier campaign.

3-1 and 5-3 defeats to Stoke and Coventry respectively may be a cause for concern against an Ipswich attack who were playing Premier League football last season, though both those previous opponents are the top two scoring sides so far at this early stage of the campaign.

Ipswich did the double over Derby the last time the two sides met back in League One three seasons ago, though that is the Rams’ only defeat at Portman Road in their last six visits there, winning on four of those occasions.

Ipswich will see Saturday’s match as the perfect opportunity to secure their first win of the season against a struggling Derby side in front of their home fans, a 2-1 home win seeming most likely.

Ipswich v Derby betting tips

Tractor Boys to round up the Rams

Ipswich have had a disappointing opening few weeks of the campaign and but Saturday will be seen as the perfect opportunity to record their first victory against a Derby side have also struggled so far.

Kieran McKenna’s side are yet to keep a clean sheet this season but come up against the second leakiest defence in the second tier so far, with new signings Kasey McAteer and Chuba Akpom still to come into the team.

Akpom to shine on home debut

Last weekend saw Chuba Akpom come off the bench to make his Ipswich debut having signed on a season long loan from Ajax, and Saturday could well see the striker make his first start for his new club in front of his home fans.

The 29-year-old has pedigree in the Championship having scored 28 goals in 38 games in his last season in the second tier while at Middlesbrough, which led to his big move to Ajax which saw him score 15 goals for the Dutch giants in his first season.

Saturday could see him make his full debut for the Tractor Boys, which will no doubt cause the Rams problems at Portman Road.
