Jack Draper withdraws from US Open as British star releases statement

Jack Draper has withdrawn from the 2025 US Open with an arm injury, just hours before he was due to play his second round match.

The British No.1 was set to face Zizou Bergs later on Wednesday night in New York, but confirmed he would no longer be taking part in the rest of the Grand Slam in a statement on social media.

Heading into the major, Draper had not played a singles match since his second-round exit at Wimbledon having struggled with bone bruising in his left humerus.

Despite this, he battled to a four-set win in the first round at Flushing Meadows, beating Argentina’s Federico Gomez.

But after the match, the 23-year-old admitted he feared he would not be able to continue in the major after suffering with discomfort.

And Draper’s worst fears now look to have been realised, as he took to social media to confirm his withdrawal from the competition.

The Brit wrote on X: “Hi guys, I’m sorry to say I’ll be withdrawing from the US open.

“I tried my very best to be here and give myself the every chance to play but the discomfort in my arm has become to much and I have to do what is right and look after myself.

“Thank you for all the support.”

The news means Draper will be unable to better his performance at last year’s US Open, where he reached the semi-finals.

He was beaten in straight sets by Jannick Sinner, who went on to win the entire tournament.

Meanwhile, his opponent Bergs has now advanced to the third round of the Grand Slam, where the Belgian will face either Gabriel Diallo or Jaume Munar.

Prior to starting his singles campaign on Monday, Draper starred alongside Jessica Pegula in the US Open’s revamped mixed doubles.

The pair reached the semi-finals of the competition, beating Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz along the way.

However, ahead of his opening match in the singles draw, Draper admitted his arm injury was still troubling him, having struggled with the issue for some time.

He revealed: “It was something I was playing through for a while.

“I first started feeling it probably towards the middle of the clay season.

“I felt like my arm was shutting down a little bit when I was hitting forehands and on the serve. It kind of got progressively worse.

“Then on the grass it got quite painful. So I didn’t know what I was dealing with.

“After the grass, I got it checked out. I had some bone stress, bone bruising, in my humerus on my left side.”

Despite sharing the extent of his injury, Draper then claimed that it wouldn’t prevent him from unleashing his best game in the final major of the year.

“It’s an injury which takes time to heal,” insisted Draper, “A bone can heal, but it might be giving me some discomfort, that’s for sure.

“It’s not something which I’m going to go out on Monday and feel like it’s holding me back at all.

“But at the same time, I have been looking after this for the last month or so, so I’m looking forward to just getting back to competing.

“I think that will take my mind off a lot of things. I don’t feel like I’ll be holding back at all.”

But with the world No.5 ultimately unable to shrug off the ongoing issue, it remains to be seen when he will return to the court.

His withdrawal from the US Open is likely to see him drop out of the world’s top 10 when his points from last year’s run to the semi-finals fall away.

This will also hamper Draper’s chances of playing at the season-ending ATP Finals, especially if he has to take another extended break following his latest setback.
