Leeds United vs Newcastle United predictions

Eddie Howe must be wondering how Newcastle United have only got one point to their name after two games of the Premier League season.

On the opening weekend, Newcastle were the better team against Aston Villa but could not make a breakthrough, even after their opponents were reduced to 10 men midway through the second half.

On Monday, it was Newcastle’s turn to have a man sent off. Anthony Gordon’s wild challenge on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk forced him off just before half-time. Immediately after the restart, Liverpool doubled their lead to make it 2-0 to the visitors to St James’ Park.

Newcastle refused to give up, though, and their admirable fight and resistance saw them level things up at 2-2. But there was one last moment of drama to come, as substitute debutant Rio Ngumoha won the match for Liverpool in the 10th minute of stoppage time.

Newcastle played well in both games against strong opposition, yet they only have a point to show for it. Worse still, they have lost Gordon to suspension and midfield duo Sandro Tonali and Joelinton to injury.

There has been frustration off the pitch too. The Alexander Isak saga will be resolved one way or another in the coming days, but it continues to cast a shadow over the club.

Meanwhile Newcastle have been frustrated in their attempts to sign a new striker. At the time of writing they have had two bids for Jorgen Strand Larsen turned down by Wolverhampton Wanderers, while long-time target Yoane Wissa remains a Brentford player.

Howe has handled the turbulence in a characteristically dignified manner, but deep down he must be frustrated. As things stand, Newcastle look undercooked.

Leeds United kick-started their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Everton, but they were brought back down to earth by a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal last weekend.

Leeds were also eliminated from the EFL Cup by Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday. Despite dominating the second-round tie at Hillsborough, Leeds could only draw 1-1 before losing the penalty shoot-out.

Daniel Farke admitted his team felt “a bit embarrassed” after losing to the Championship crisis club, but the EFL Cup was never a priority for Leeds this term. A win this weekend would more than make up for their exit from the secondary cup competition.

Leeds United vs Newcastle United betting tips

Leeds United host Newcastle United in the late Premier League kick-off on Saturday.

Leeds can avoid defeat

With Tonali, Joelinton, Gordon and Isak all unavailable on Saturday, Newcastle will be without four of their most important players.

Bruno Guimaraes will be under pressure to hold together a midfield which is also likely to feature new signing Jacob Ramsey and the 18-year-old Lewis Miley.

Newcastle have struggled to convert chances from open play without Isak, and the loss of Gordon harms them further.

This is a good time to face the Magpies, and with home advantage behind them Leeds can get something from this game.

It will still be tough for Farke’s charges to beat Newcastle, so the double chance market is the best choice.

Low-scoring game good value

Leeds did a good job of keeping Everton at bay on the opening weekend, registering a clean sheet at the first time of asking.

Although the floodgates opened at the Emirates Stadium on matchday two, the Whites should have more success defensively when this under-strength Newcastle side heads to Elland Road.

Without several midfielders and forwards, Howe is likely to focus on keeping things tight at the back first and foremost.

This has the makings of a hard-fought, scrappy game in which chances are relatively few and far between.

Anyone hoping for a high-scoring encounter will probably be disappointed.

Worth a punt on Nmecha

Lucas Nmecha scored Leeds’s only goal of the Premier League season to date, converting the winning penalty against Everton.

Nmecha began that match on the bench and he was also a substitute against Arsenal, but after starting the Sheffield Wednesday game the German could retain his place in the XI here.

At the odds available, it is well worth a punt on Nmecha finding the back of the net against Newcastle.

A summer signing from Wolfsburg, Nmecha is desperate to impress in the Premier League. He is one to watch on Saturday.
