A familiar race is returning to Kansas City.

The Chiefs have acquired veteran defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi.

Nnadi’s arrival comes as part of a trade with the New York Jets, with Gang Green getting a sixth-round pick in 2027 in exchange for the defensive tackle and a seventh-round pick.

The 29-year-old’s return to the Chiefs comes just five months after he joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent.

Nnadi was a full-time starter for the Chiefs between 2018-2023, a period in which he won three Super Bowls alongside Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and co.

But after losing his place for the 2024 season ahead of free agency, he departed for New York.

Now, he’s heading back to Kansas City and will certainly be welcomed by his teammates.

Nnadi’s infamous sack dance

Among all the successes, one of Nnadi’s most famous Chiefs moments came after a sack.

Back in November 2021, against the Las Vegas Raiders, Nnadi got his third career sack on Raiders QB Derek Carr, which prompted a wild celebration.

The celebration saw Nnadi bang his chest and throw his arm around.

Amused by his dance while standing on the sidelines, Mahomes and Kelce copied his celebration.

The pair couldn’t contain their laughter while Nnadi continued to dance.

Why are the Chiefs reacquiring Nnadi?

The Chiefs were in need of a veteran interior lineman for early downs.

And with the 53-man roster cuts coming soon, Kansas City couldn’t risk the Jets letting Nnadi go to a different team.

So, a deal was made to bring Nnadi back to the Chiefs as it became clear he was unlikely to make the Jets’ roster after NY added two defensive tackles in Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs.

Nnadi will probably not be a starter in this chapter of his Chiefs career, as it’s likely he’ll be a rotational defender next to Chris Jones, KC’s star pass rusher.

This Chiefs’ move comes after they cut ties with Skyy Moore in a deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

It was that deal that opened up a roster spot for Nnadi.
