‘Sacked in the morning’ – Fans turn on Championship manager just five games into new season

Sheffield United fans are already urging the board to sack boss Ruben Selles with the club rooted to the bottom of the Championship table.
Middlesbrough are the latest team to beat the Blades as they ran out 1-0 victors at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The result leaves the Blades without a single point from their opening four league matches.
United also were knocked out by Birmingham in the first round of the Carabao Cup with Selles losing each of his five matches in charge across all competitions.
The South Yorkshire outfit were tipped as one of the favourites to earn promotion back to the Premier League after suffering a heartbreaking defeat to Sunderland in last season’s play-off final.
But fans appear to be concerned about their horror start as they fear they could drop down into League One for the first time since the 2016/17 term.
As Selles and the United players went over to the away end following their defeat to Boro, supporters could be heard chanting in union: ‘Sacked in the morning, you’re getting sacked in the morning.”
Boos were then aimed towards the 42-year-old, who simply clapped the fans before walking back towards the tunnel.
Big things were expected of Selles at Bramall Lane after he guided Hull to safety last campaign – winning nine of his 28 matches.
He was ultimately relieved of his duties, with United wasting no time in snapping him up after they parted ways with Chris Wilder.
What did Ruben Selles say after Sheffield United’s defeat?
Speaking to the press after United’s latest setback, Selles was asked whether he believes he will be in charge for the clash at Ipswich after the international break.
To which he admitted that his future is out of his hands in a brutally honest admission.
He said: “Well, listen, I cannot control the situation.
“I will expect to go to my house tonight and then tomorrow go to work and then continue as normal.
“It’s not in my hands to make a decision.
“And until the very last moment, I will just do my best and try to do my things.
“When the situation is not in my control, I don’t think too much about what is going to happen in the future.
“Because realistically, I do as much as I can.
“At least if I go out, whether that’s tomorrow or if it’s in three years, I will always go out with the feeling that I made the decisions that I want to make.
“Obviously that includes my mistakes, but my decisions were honest and what I thought was the correct thing to do in every single moment.”
Pressed on whether he believes he can turn things around, Selles remarked: “I have been in worse situations and I end up just making the things happen and changing totally around the dynamics.
“So I don’t have a doubt about it. I’ve been in situations where I haven’t been paid on time, situations when they get points deduction, situations where we didn’t know if we would be able to train the next day at the training ground.
“And the reality is that we turned things around at the moment of connection. But you need to work hard to go to that moment and you need to go through a couple of critical moments on that journey.
“That’s what I learned. I understand and accept that this is football, but I also know that this team is going to do great things.”
