Sunderland v Brentford predictions
Both teams were expected to struggle this season before the new Premier League campaign got underway but both will also be content with their starts to the new season, each having won one of their two matches so far.
Brentford will make the long trip from the capital to Wearside as the favourites for victory after stringing together back to back victories in response to suffering a 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest in their opening game of the new Premier League season.
Many had predicted the Bees to struggle this season after losing their manager, Thomas Frank, and much of his coaching staff to Tottenham in the off-season, while their club captain Christian Norgaard and best player also departed, with it seeming that their next best player, Yoane Wissa, could follow suit before the window closes.
Keith Andrews was named as Frank’s successor in the dugout in his first job in charge of a team, and the Irishman seems to have impressed since his opening day defeat.
The west London side beat an Aston Villa team competing in the Europa League this season on the weekend to record their first win of the campaign, and following it up with victory away at Bournemouth in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
Saturday night’s victory leaves Brentford in the top half of the table with three points from their opening two games, and will back themselves to add three more to their tally on this weekend as they take on a newly promoted Sunderland side.
Sunderland put in perhaps the most impressive performance of the opening weekend of the Premier League season as they upset the odds to beat West Ham 3-0 in their first game back in the top flight since their relegation in 2017.
Optimism was high ahead of their visit to a fellow newly promoted Burnley side the following weekend who had just been beaten 3-0 by Tottenham, but the Black Cats fell to a 2-0 defeat at Turf Moor, and have since been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after losing at home against League One side Huddersfield.
Regis le Bris’ side will be determined to get back to winning ways back in front of their home fans in what the club will consider a very winnable game against a Brentford side blighted by key exits to their management and squad over the summer.
Sunderland are winless against Saturday’s opponents in their last five meetings, with the Black Cats most recent win against the Bees coming in a third division game 37 years ago.
The Wearside club will be aware that their home form will be crucial in their bid to survive in the Premier League for another year, particularly when playing fellow bottom half sides, so will be desperate for victory on Saturday.
I can see two teams gunning for victory cancelling each other out leaving a 1-1 draw looking most likely.
Sunderland v Brentford betting tips
Black Cats-Bees stalemate
Both sides will see Saturday’s match as a huge opportunity to add a valuable three points to their tally, which would take the winner to six points from three matches when both teams had been expected to struggle this season.
With each side going gung-ho, it’s imaginable that both sides will cancel each other out with such valuable three points on the line, and both would likely settle for a point in the end.
- Draw and both teams to score at 7/2 with bet365
Thiago to continue goal scoring form
Igor Thiago has been leading the line for Brentford this season in the absence of Yoane Wissa, who looks set to depart the Gtech Community Stadium in the closing days of the summer transfer window, and has impressed since being handed the role.
The Brazilian’s first season in the Premier League was blighted heavily by injury, making just eight appearances in the entire campaign without scoring, with only one start, but has hit the ground running in his second season, his goal at Bournemouth on Tuesday night doubling his tally just three games into the new season.
- Igor Thiago to score at 2/1 with Sky Bet
