La Liga Outright Tips
- Barcelona to win La Liga @ 1/1
- Athletic Bilbao to finish in the top four @ 11/8
- Alexander Sortloth top goalscorer @ SP
Real uncertainty can give Barca the advantage
Real Madrid tailed off last term but still only finished four points behind Barcelona. However, there remain real doubts over how they will look after the transfer window, with further incomings and outgoings expected.
Xabi Alonso is also trying to become the first Los Blancos boss since Vicente Del Bosque 25 years ago to successfully implement a back-three that also accommodates Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior’s diminishing willingness to work off the ball.
Things are hardly simpler for El Clásico rivals Barcelona, who have again signed players they may not be able to register.
The Blaugrana are also at war with their captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who the board have already potentially replaced with Joan Garcia but refuses to be strong-armed towards the exit as a byproduct of his employers’ financial mismanagement.
However, amid it all is coach Hansi Flick, who enjoyed a fine first season in Spain and who, unlike Alonso, has been able to give his players the summer off as they weren’t involved in the Club World Cup.
There will be twists, turns and fallouts, but Flick and his players are good at avoiding the outside noise.
In a season in which they are also set to return to Camp Nou, Barcelona can again overhaul a tired Real, and it might even be improved Atletico Madrid who run them closest.
Los Leones can retain Champions League place
Athletic Bilbao finished fourth last term, but missing out on the Europa League final staged at their San Mames home meant their season felt like a case of what might have been.
They can pick themselves up, and playing in the Champions League may suit them as it means they will avoid the grind of Thursday-Sunday football.
Athletic’s unique transfer policy limits their activity but Jesus Areso is a good acquisition from Osasuna.
Bilbao’s big victory this summer has been retaining Nico Williams after he decided to snub the chaos at Barcelona for a second straight year.
In 2024-25, they finished level on 70 points with fifth-placed Villarreal, 10 points clear of Real Betis in sixth. Both of those teams have lost key players, whereas Athletic look slightly stronger.
The Basque side also have Ernesto Valverde at the helm. The 61-year-old is among the most underrated coaches in the game and so much at Barca could have been different if their board had kept him on in 2020.
A calm coach, his man-management skills mean stars like the Williams brothers continue to buy into his team-first approach and Los Leones’ unity makes them the best bet to finish behind the big three.
More minutes may help Sorloth achieve his Pichichi goal
Alexander Sorloth scored 23 goals for Villarreal in 2023-24, one shy of the Pichichi winner, Artem Dovbyk.
Sorloth’s performances persuaded Atletico Madrid to sign him, and on paper, he may not have repaid their faith, despite scoring ‘only’ 20 goals.
But, delve deeper, and the Norwegian’s numbers are phenomenal. He was often used off the bench and, in fact, averaged 1.15 goals in 90 minutes.
The 29-year-old publicly questioned Diego Simeone’s repeated decisions to use him as an impact player, but may get more opportunities this season, even with Giacomo Raspadori’s arrival from Napoli.
Los Colchoneros have also added real midfield creativity in Alex Baena, John Cardoso and Thiago Almada, meaning Sorloth could get even more opportunities in front of goal.
Last season’s top scorer, Mbappe and Robert Lewandowski lead the market but Sorloth’s numbers in the previous two seasons make him a shrewd value option.
