Three ex-Premier League players training with Sheffield United ahead of possible transfers

Sheffield United have handed former Liverpool and Southampton striker Danny Ings the opportunity to earn a contract at the club.

The 33-year-old is a free agent having left West Ham at the end of last season.

Ings spent two years at the London Stadium, scoring five goals in 69 appearances during a spell that mainly saw him get utilised from the bench.

The three-cap England international has been training with Sheffield United alongside former Southampton and England player Nathan Redmond as well as ex-Brentford defender Ben Mee.

Both Ings and Redmond played under Blades’ boss Ruben Selles during the Spaniard’s stint as manager in 2023.

Redmond, like Ings, is a free agent after leaving Burnley last season.

Ings, who cost Southampton £18m in 2019 when he signed from Liverpool, will offer a goal threat currently missing for the Blades.

Meanwhile, winger Redmond who is 31 years old, will believe he has plenty to offer the Championship strugglers with plenty of Premier League experience under his belt.

The pair join Mee in trying to impress Selles as they plot a way back into football with the Bramall Lane club.

And it could be a busy end to the transfer window for Selles’ side with Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga expected to imminently seal his move to Sheffield United.

Meanwhile, reports in Serbia claim the Blades are set to trigger the €5m release clause for Red Star Belgrade right-back Seol Young-woo before Monday’s deadline.

That could give Selles a huge pot of defensive stars to choose from with Ben Godfrey, Nils Zatterstrom, Femi Seriki, Tyler Bindon and Jack Robinson at his disposal.

Selles will hope to get as many fresh faces through the door as possible before Monday to give his side fresh impetus after a disastrous start to the season.

The Blades boss will also have the luxury of dipping into the free transfer market with free agent signings allowed even after deadline day.

Sheffield United sit bottom of the Championship with four defeats from their opening four games.

They have scored just once across that period and the possible inclusion of Redmond and Ings could provide Selles with a huge lift.

Similarly, Mee could add some much-needed steel to a back line that has shipped six goals in the league.

Fans voiced their discontent after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Millwall, although a poor first-half showing was significantly better after the interval.

Asked about the fans’ booing at half time, Selles said: “I think the fans always have the right to express themselves and what they did is normal.

“The first two games at home, we didn’t get a victory, we got two defeats and now it’s four in total. They’re disappointed with the team and that we need to take on board.

“I think we can feel their disappointment, we can feel exactly the same things that they feel.

“But we are the only ones that can change that more for the fans and then we can do it.”

Things will not get any easier for Selles’ side this weekend when they return to Championship action.

Sheffield United face high-flyers Middlesbrough on Saturday in the hope of putting their first points on the board.
