Toyota’s New Supercar Delayed – And It Might Lose Power

Toyota fans have been waiting decades for a true successor to the legendary MKIV Supra, since the GR Supra didn't quite scratch that itch. Now, it looks like Toyota might exceed those expectations with a sports car boasting genuine supercar numbers. Until recently, 2025 seemed locked in as the year it would finally arrive. A camouflaged prototype has already been spotted testing at Spa and Fuji, and Toyota even brought it to Goodwood for a demo run. But if fresh reports out of Japan are accurate, the wait for the road-going Toyota GT Concept, just like its Lexus-badged counterpart, might not be over just yet.

Toyota GT Concept: What to Expect

In traditional Supra fashion, the new Toyota GT Concept is being positioned as Japan’s answer to Europe’s finest. First previewed by the GR GT3 Concept, the road car is expected to pack a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with a hybrid system. According to Best Car, the V8 alone should deliver between 700 and 720 horsepower, with the hybrid system pushing total output close to 900 horsepower. The GT Racing Concept, however, will skip the hybrid setup entirely. GT3 rules prohibit hybrid systems, so the racing version will rely solely on its gasoline V8.

Brother To The Lexus Sport Concept

Like the current-generation Supra, the GT Concept won’t exist in isolation. It shares its DNA with the newly revealed Lexus Sport Concept, unveiled during Monterey Car Week. Both models are set to ride on a brand-new platform, one that will also underpin the next-generation Supra. This isn’t the first time Toyota and Lexus have worked together like this. The MKIV Supra famously shared key components with the Lexus SC, creating two very different personalities from the same bones. History could repeat itself here: Toyota leaning into hybrid V8 performance with the GT Concept, while Lexus may give the Sport Concept an all-electric treatment.

Why the Delay and When It Might Arrive

While the GT Racing Concept is still scheduled for late 2025, Best Car reports the road-going GT Concept has been delayed. The likely culprit is tougher emissions standards, which could also force Toyota to tone down performance figures. That points to a debut sometime in 2026. Still, if Toyota gets it right, there's a serious chance the GT Concept could become the most exciting Japanese performance car since the Lexus LFA.
