Khloe Kardashian’s Relationship With Tristan Thompson’s Brother Amari

Khloé Kardashian split with Tristan Thompson in 2021, but she has remained a part of his brother Amari’s life in the years since.

Amari, 19, suffers from Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a form of epilepsy that prevents him from being able to walk and talk. Kardashian, 41, grew close to him and the rest of Tristan’s family while they were together.

Amari had been living in Canada with his mother Andrea until her death in 2023. Now, Kardashian is his caretaker. (Kardashian also shares daughter True, 7, and son Tatum, 2, with Tristan.)

“When I met Tristan and his family, like, nine years ago, Andrea and I became such good friends. I had such a great relationship with Andrea and I would help her with Amari, medically,” Kardashian explained on the Wednesday, July 30, episode of her “Khloé in Wonder Land” podcast. “She would have questions, she would need connections to certain doctors, and I would help with that. I was very much involved in all of his medical appointments when Andrea was here.”

To help, Kardashian said that she employs two “sensational caretakers.”

“We just want to provide Amari with the best, most beautiful life that we know how,” she said. “And he deserves that.”

With Thompson playing in the NBA, most recently for the Cleveland Cavaliers, his travel schedule would make it difficult to give Amari the care he needs on his own.

“Tristan is in the NBA and he is in a different state, literally, every other day or every few days, and it’s just not conducive for Amari to be on that many planes,” Kardashian explained. “Amari has a handful of seizures a day with the type of epilepsy that he has.”

She continued, “So Amari stays in L.A. with me and I have chosen to take care of him and be there for him because it’s not good that he travels. California weather is so good for Amari, and I just love having Amari be a part of my family.”

Tristan Became Amari’s Legal Guardian in 2024

After his mother’s death, Tristan, 34, fought for his brother’s guardianship.

“[I want] to ensure that Amari continues to have a happy and fulfilling life and to provide him with the best care possible,” he argued at the time in court documents obtained by Us Weekly.

He added that becoming Amari’s guardian “would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs.”

Tristan was granted temporary guardianship in September 2023 and became Amari’s legal guardian in February 2024.

Kardashian and Amari’s Bond Is More Important Than Her Past Drama With Tristan

Kardashian has made it clear since her breakup with Tristan that her relationship with Amari is more important than anything going on between her and her ex.

“I also know how much Amari means to Andrea and she passed away because she had a sudden heart attack. Me being in a relationship or not with Tristan, I still have this family that I’ve spent so many years with, that I have such connections with, that my relationship with Andrea has nothing to do with Tristan,” she said. “Amari deserves my love and care regardless of where me and Tristan stand.”

The Rest of the Kardashian Family Has Embraced Amari

Khloé isn’t the only member of the Kardashian family who has grown close with Amari. Kim Kardashian has spoken about how she values her own kids growing up alongside him. Kim, 44, shares kids North, 11, Saint, 8, Chicago, 6, and Psalm, 5, with ex-husband Kanye West.

“I love our kids growing up around him and helping him,” Kim said during an April 2025 episode of The Kardashians. “They have lots of questions and at times they might not be the most comfortable. But I think it is so important that they play with him and they really get to know him.”

Their mom, Kris Jenner, shared a heartfelt birthday wish for Amari in July when he turned 19, posting a carousel of images via Instagram on Sunday, July 27.

“Happy birthday to our sweet angel boy, Amari!!!” she wrote. “You have touched all of our lives in ways I can’t explain. Through every smile, every hug, and all of the special moments we share together, you remind us of what truly matters… love, family, being present, and showing up for one another with our whole hearts.”

She added, “Amari, you are such a sweet soul and the brightest light. “Thank you for teaching me more than I could ever teach you!!! I thank God every day for you, and I love you very much!!”
