Michael Jordan enters $7million ‘Super Bowl of fishing’ and bags huge prize with 71lb monster

Michael Jordan put his super yacht to good use in the famous White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland.

The annual deep-sea event finished on August 10 with around $7 million in prizes in various categories.

Bagging a huge tuna, blue marlin, wahoo, or dolphin — the fish not the mammal — each brought their own prizes.

But Jordan’s boat — named Catch 23 after his Chicago Bulls jersey — was chasing the prestigious white marlin, with $4 million of the total pot going to the crew who landed the biggest beast.

Second place is not a familiar sight for MJ, who won in each of his six trips to the NBA Finals, but a 71lb fish caught by Trey ‘Cricket’ McMillan of Charleston, South Carolina, wasn’t enough this time.

Dan Gough reeled in a 72lb specimen to take the prize, with McMillan’s effort on Catch 23 good enough for $390,000.

That is only a fraction of the estimated $8 million His Airness paid for his boat.

Michael Jordan’s net worth

Thankfully, the NBA great earned almost $94 million on the court and much more off it to achieve a net worth of $3.5 billion.

The Open is one of the richest in fishing and has 52 years of history.

As Jordan’s boat returned to the harbor, the Alan Parsons Project song Sirus — which gained worldwide fame as the Bulls’ MJ-era entrance music — played over the sound system.

Another competitor, Jimmy David, compared the tournament to the Super Bowl.

“The biggest tournament, people come from all over,” David said to COAST TV. “Michael Jordan, all kinds of people. I heard they have the Secretary of the Navy over there and all kinds of celebrities. And the best of the best fishing. That’s for sure — the Super Bowl.”

MJ would have to catch a lot of fish to pay off his boat

Michael Jordan lands NBC Sports role

Jordan will soon be known as His On-Airness as he takes up a role with NBC Sports.

It’s the biggest catch since FOX Sports hooked Tom Brady onto a 10-year deal worth $375 million.

Former Bulls teammate John Salley is expecting fireworks.

The four-time NBA champion played with Jordan for half a season in 1996 and won a chip with the legendary figure that year.

“It’s gonna be a lot of, ‘That boy sucks!” Salley said on The Rich Eisen Show.

“Man, I don’t know how they’re paying that guy, I wouldn’t have paid him. Oh, he is 62 now, he is going to tell you what he thinks.

NBC have poached arguably the best talent going in Jordan ahead of the 2025 season.

“I am so excited to see the NBA back on NBC,” Jordan said in a statement.

“The NBA on NBC was a meaningful part of my career, and I’m excited about being a special contributor to the project. I’m looking forward to seeing you all when the NBA on NBC launches this October.”
