18-year-old tennis star breaks Coco Gauff record after destroying her in 60 minutes in shocking upset

Teenager Victoria Mboko produced a shocking upset in Montreal.
The 18-year-old easily handled top seed Coco Gauff to reach the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open on Saturday, defeating the American 6-1, 6-4 in just 62 minutes.
Mboko needed a wildcard to play in this tournament, but now she’s enjoying a meteoric rise up the WTA rankings with her performances at her home tournament.
The Canadian converted four of five break points against Gauff as she dominated proceedings, like she has all tournament, dropping just one set in four matches so far,
“Coming into the match, I was so locked in,” Mboko said after her win.
“I tried to keep my composure as much as I could, especially playing in front of so many people. This is a very special experience for me.”
Victoria Mboko’s record-breaking night
This was also a full-circle moment for Mboko, as her win means she’ll be the youngest quarter-finalist at the Canadian Open since Gauff in 2022.
She is also the fifth-youngest player to defeat a top-seed in a WTA-1000 event since the format’s introduction.
Mboko, who enjoyed a historic run at the French Open in May, began the year ranked 333rd in the world, but after 22 successive wins on the ITF tour and five titles, coupled with her performances at the majors, she now sits at 53rd in the live rankings.
In contrast, Gauff, who has now lost three matches since winning the French Open, which includes her shocking first-round Wimbledon defeat, struggled with her serve again.
She committed six double-faults to take her tournament total to 43 in just three matches.
Nevertheless, Gauff remained optimistic in her post-match press conference and praised her teenage opponent.
“I think she’s going to have a lot of success on tour. I’m sure we’re going to have many more battles in the future,” Gauff said.
“I think she’s going to have a lot of success on tour.”
The American was also quick to dismiss any comparisons between her and Mboko.
“No, she’s a completely different player, completely different person,” she added.
“I’ve never been one to compare myself to others, whether it be like people comparing me to Serena (Williams) or Venus, and I don’t think it’s fair to put that on her as well.
“Yeah, but I do see someone who is going to have a really bright future, for sure.”
Who does Victoria Mboko play next?
Mboko will play Jessica Bouzas Maneiro for a spot in the semifinals on Monday.
Meanwhile, Wimbledon winner Iga Swiatek will play today for a spot in the quarterfinals, as she takes on Clara Tauson.
Australian Open winner and American Maddison Keys is also looking for a quarterfinal spot but has Karolína Muchova in her way.
After the Canadian Open, players will head to the Cincinnati Open before the US Open begins on Aug. 24.
