Randy Orton breaks insane 38-year WWE record with Logan Paul SummerSlam match at MetLife Stadium

Randy Orton arrives at SummerSlam on Saturday night not just to fight, but to make history.
SummerSlam 2025 takes place this weekend across two nights – tonight, August 2 and Sunday, August 3 – at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Orton teams with Grammy-nominated country rap artist Jelly Roll in a tag match against Drew McIntyre and Logan Paul, confirmed for Night One.
Despite early passport troubles that threatened McIntyre’s attendance, the Scottish Warrior overcame them and joins Paul in the match as planned.
Logan Paul and Jelly Roll join Orton in star-studded Night One tag match
The storyline build-up included heated confrontations on SmackDown and Saturday Night’s Main Event in recent weeks, with Orton and Jelly Roll emerging victorious in the lead-in clash, only to suffer a post-match assault from McIntyre and Paul – setting the tone for the tag bout at SummerSlam.
It’s been a long road to this weekend for Orton, whose SummerSlam story began back in 2003 with an Elimination Chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship.
The following year in 2004, he captured that title by defeating Chris Benoit, becoming the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in WWE history.
Over the years, Orton’s SummerSlam highlights have included marquee singles bouts – versus Sheamus in 2015, Kofi Kingston in 2019, and a tag team victory alongside Matt Riddle in 2021 for the Raw Tag Team Championship against AJ Styles and Omos.
That 2021 outing marked his 16th SummerSlam match and most recent.
At the 38th edition of WWE’s megashow, Orton is set to wrestle his 17th match at SummerSlam – officially surpassing the record previously shared with The Undertaker.
The Deadman made his first in-ring SummerSlam appearance in 1992 in iconic scenes at Wembley Stadium, toppling Kamala.
Taker later defended the WWE title at SummerSlam in 1997 but was unseated by Bret Hart just months before the Canadian’s dramatic exit from the company.
SummerSlam’s longest-serving icon takes the record in Netflix era
The legendary Phenom’s final SummerSlam, in 2015, saw him defeat Brock Lesnar in a controversial main event. That epic 24-year span gave him 16 matches in total.
Orton’s milestone match joins a loaded Netflix-era card.
This year’s tag bout is part of a stacked Night One line-up that also includes CM Punk vs. Gunther for the World Heavyweight Championship, and a titanic tag team tussle pairing Roman Reigns and Jey Uso against Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed.
Tiffany Stratton vs. Jade Cargill for the Women’s Championship also features, as does Cody Rhodes challenging John Cena for the Undisputed WWE title.
It’s not just the longevity that stands out – it’s the range. Orton has competed in title matches, tag team bouts, multi-man chaos and generational showdowns.
Across eras, alliances and heel turns, he’s been a consistent presence at WWE’s second-biggest annual event.
Now, with match number 17 on the books, Randy Orton stands alone in SummerSlam history as the most tenured star in the summer spectacle’s storied 38-year history.
It seems fitting the man once known as the Legend Killer will now have stars gunning for his 17-match record, but in modern-day WWE, that seems quite the unthinkable feat.
